Knee

Osteoarthritis (OA)

There are several studies showing the benefits of RF in patients with OA of the knee

Alcidi et al. 2007 treated patients with OA knee with 5 x 20min sessions (500khz) over 5 days compared to TENS. The RF group reported significantly lower pain levels for a greater length of time than the TENS group

Tavenor et al. 2010 treated patients awaiting knee replacement. Contrary to the above study they used 1 x 10min session (480khz). At 1 and 4 weeks the treated group showed significantly lower pain levels compared to placebo

Takahashi et al. 2011 in a small study used RF to increase the temperature inside the knee of OA patients and reported improvements in pain and ROM (this was a small study group of 12 patients as they used an invasive thermometer to measure temperature inside the knee joint)

Nelson et al. 2013 treated OA knees with RF for an average of 80 15 minute sessions (+/-9) over 42 days. The treated group reported a 3x improvement in pain scores compared to a placebo group.
