Neck Pain

RF is best considered an adjunct within the treatment of neck pain.

Foley et al. 1990 found that RF in ‘chronic’ neck pain provided significant pain reduction and improvement in ROM (this can be seen in real time in most patients). They compared low level RF to a placebo treatment.

The video below shows Tecarpuls used to treat whiplash:

Dziedzic et al. 2005 found similar results to Foley in a much larger study but combined RF with exercises and advice. The study used many different clinicians offering 15-20mins RF over 6 weeks for a total of 8 treatments. The clinicians used their judgment for intensity and treatment spacing. As per the lumbar spine RF and advice alone was not more effective than other contemporary treatments.

Lewis 2007 also found similar results to the studies above but did find that using RF was not the most cost effective way of dealing with neck pain.
